2007 is SHAKESPEARE in the PARK’s 18th season of bringing quality performances to the Chico community. In 1990 we performed Romeo & Juliet beneath the stars at the one mile campfi re ring, in beautiful Bidwell Park. The Program was so popular that we moved to the wide open spaces of cedar grove, our summer home for 16 years of theatrical productions.
This year SHAKESPEARE in the PARK is moving to the new City Plaza. Our new theatre will be the classic Romanesque amphitheater in the heart of downtown Chico.
Another big move we’re making is that we will no longer have an admission price, entrance will be by donation only. This beloved Chico tradition will now be open to the community on a pay what you can basis.
The value of performing arts in Chico cannot be overstated. Live theatre is an opportunity for the populace to come together, connect and be an active participant in the creative process. In a live production the audience affects the performance. Theatre audiences are a vital element in the creation of every performance, making each night individual and unique. It is that viewer involvement that sets theatre apart from other mediums.
Theatre has the power to inspire. Many of SHAKESPEARE in the PARK’s current actors were children whose parents brought them to see our shows years ago. That experience ignited their imaginations and is still apart of their adult lives. Our cast members range from 8 to 80 all working together to create this gift for their community.
